A lot of parents are concerned with when is it time my kid is supposed to start practicing basketball, but a lot of them forget that as soon as life starts learning starts.
What that means is that it’s never too early to start playing with your kid and creating a healthy body development regime by promoting motoric movements from young.
The optimal age for kids to start playing basketball, or practicing it as a team sport is 5-6 years old. But do not expect them to learn to play it in a couple of months, basketball is a difficult sport with great benefits.
Body and mind, working hard to achieve something, teamwork, all of those are the benefits of learning basketball, but as many coaches know the development is slow. It takes years and years to learn some fundamentals, to actually see the skill level growth you need to know what to look at.
When kids get to the age of 5 they are ready to start the journey of manipulating a round object and bend it to their wills. It will be funny looking at the start, the ball will run away from them and they will run away from the ball, but slowly you will see the improvements.
In my opinion, starting at age 5 would be great, at that point what I consider the kids need is fun through learning.
How you ask?
Simple, we play games, we have competitions, we learn dribbling with different obstacles in our way, we run and jump in all possible ways to activate our bodies’ muscles and train our eye-hand coordination. Doing so we encurage and promote basketball for the young ones, make it fun and educational, and as good coaches, I think you need to do this for them no matter how old they are.
